Cinemark Young Lions – Let the Judging Begin

The judging team working on the 2014 Cinemark Young Lions Competition has a busy week ahead of them as they work through the 63 entries to this year’s competition. And according to Jury President, Jenny Glover: “I\’m interested in work that demonstrates an ability to think conceptually. I\’m an old-school insights girl and I\’m generally hooked by great ideas not flashy executions. We also need to remember that these woodchucks will be representing South Africa in Cannes so we need to be confident that they will do us proud.”

This is the first time a Jury President has been appointed in the local leg of the competition. This, plus the international mix of Judges, brings a superb level of expertise to the panel, ensuring that the competition is run according to international norms – preparing the winners in the best way possible for the heated competition in Cannes come June 2014.

The Judges include:

Jury President – Jenny Glover, Joint Creative Director Net#work BBDO South Africa. Jenny has won 31 awards in the last four years including golds at every major international award show. Highlights include three D&AD pencils, six Gold Lions and a much prized Cannes Grand Prix. She sits on the Creative Circle executive board and has judged at the D&AD and at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.

Yordan Zhechev, Chief Creative DDB Sofia Bulgaria. Yordan has won numerous awards making him the most awarded Creative Director in Bulgaria. His current agency won Agency of the Year in 2010, 2012 and 2013. Yordan has acted as Jury Head for the Bulgarian Advertising Awards in 2011 and 2013 respectively.

Yordan comments “I am thrilled I am part of the Young Lions jury. I have read about and studied South Africa, but I’ve never actually been there – I hope my lack of knowledge of the intricacies and inside humor does not hinder the selection –– on the contrary though – my interested foreigner’s eye should ensure whichever idea wins is truly international and understandable – no matter what the context.”

Jason Apaliski, Creative Director Pereira & O’Dell USA. Most recently Jason led the creative development for “The Beauty Inside”, a social film for Intel and Toshiba that earned the agency an Emmy for “Outstanding New Approach” as well as an unprecedented three Grand Prix at Cannes for Film, Cyber and Branded Content.

Jason was named to the 2014 One Show Interactive jury, the industry’s most prestigious awards competition celebrating the year’s best in digital media and design.

Mihnea Gheorghiu, Group Creative Director Publicis Romania, has worked across the globe from Paris to New York. Mihnea’s awards collection is also impressive winning 30 awards from Cannes to the London Internationals – including a Young Guns Gold , a Clio Gold, a Student Young Guns of the Decade, a Eurobest Craft Grand Prix , an IAA Romania Excellence Award , a Clio Future Gold and an Effie Gold. Mihnea will also be judging the film section in the New York Festivals this year.

According to Mihnea “I really look forward to the judging. I have to admit – I\’ve had a crush on South Africa\’s advertising scene for quite a while now. So it\’s really amazing I\’m getting to do this now.”

Justin Gomes, Creative Director and Founding Partner, FoxP2 and current Chairman of Creative Circle South Africa. After gaining international experience at TBWA Paris and then Lowe New York for over five years on brands that included The New York Times, Nissan, Playstation, Got Milk? and GMC, Justin returned to Cape Town in 2005 to found an independent agency named after the creativity gene, FoxP2. His awards list is epic – with over 73 awards and counting. Including three Cannes Golds, a One Show Gold, a Clio Gold, six Coca Cola Ad of the Year 1st place awards, Campaign Magazine UK Best International Print Campaign of the Year, 13 Loeries Golds and a Grand Prix.

He has also judged the Loeries every year for 27 years. 14 Of his 32 years in the advertising game were spent at a gambit of multi-national agencies; the last 18 as a founding partner of The Jupiter Drawing Room, Africa’s most awarded independent agency.
