The 2017 Winners

They had just 48 hours to complete the task, from brief to concept to shooting, editing and the final production of a 60 second commercial. But, for one creative team, those could just be the most important 48 hours in their exciting young advertising careers to date!

The Cannes Young Lions competition for 2017 is currently underway around the world. Here in South Africa, the Cannes Lions festival’s local representative, Cinemark, announced its participation in this year’s event, with its sponsorship of the Film category, in partnership with Air France.

Following a very close judging process of the shortlisted Top 20 entries last week, that lucky team is Amri Botha and Carina Coetzee, from the Cape Town-based agency, Ninety9cents. Their winning commercial has just earned them an all-expenses paid trip to attend the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity from 17 – 24 June 2017, in Cannes, France. During the festival, Amri and Carina will also compete in the global Cannes Young Lions competition in the Film category, which follows the same 48-hour format.

What is it all about?

As the exclusive Cannes Lions Festival Representative for South Africa, Cinemark is committed to the nurturing of creativity in brand communication. Screenings of highlights and winning work from Cannes Lions are hosted at select Ster-Kinekor Theatres after each international Festival. The launch takes places in the form of an extravaganza in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban attended by top industry players in advertising and media.

Cinemark is also responsible for managing the Young Lions competition locally – two young talented creative people are selected every year to attend the Festival in Cannes, and represent South Africa in a global version of the competition.

Background

South Africa sends 2 delegates to compete in the film section of the Cannes Young Lions competition each year. A local competition is run whereby a creative director and art director respond to a brief to create awareness for a CSR initiative.

What you need to know

Imagine having only 48 hours to film and edit a 30-second commercial. This is the challenge that young creatives will face in the Cannes Young Lions 2017 Film Competition.

The client will present the brief to the teams. Creatives will then have 48 hours to film original footage. An iMac video suite will be available for teams to edit their final film in Cannes.

The local competition of Young Lions will follow a similar format. The competition is open to all creatives under the age of 30. Teams must register for the South African competition by Monday 24 April 2017, on this website in order to enter.

A brief will be published on Saturday 22 April 2017 from 12h00. All creative must be submitted by Monday 24 April 2017 12h00. Judging will commence thereafter.

Winners will be announced on Wednesday 10 May 2017. They will then represent South Africa in the Young Lions Competition at the 63rd Cannes Lions Festival to be held 17 to 24 June 2017!

Please note that creative teams need to have their own resources, such as an iMac video suite in order to produce their entry video.
